What Happens If You Don’t Take Proper Care of Teeth?

Teeth must be kept free of dental plaque build-up, through consistent flossing and brushing and regular visits to your dental hygienist. Plaque which is made up of food debris and bacteria can lead to an inflammation of the gums, irritation, bleeding and even receding. It can also damage the tooth supporting bone, eventually resulting in shaky tooth and tooth loss if not addressed in time.

Foods high in carbohydrates and sugar, including pop, candy, breads, cereals, juice and pastas, are the worst contributors to plaque build-up. The acids released by the bacteria while breaking down the sugar in food particles, initiate the tooth decay process. The tooth decay, if not treated in time, can progress further to cause dental pulp infection and dental abscess.

How Can I Prevent Tooth Decay and Gum Infection?

Your best option is to follow a regular oral hygiene routine that includes flossing, brushing teeth twice daily (morning and at bed time) and use of fluoride containing mouth rinses, in addition to maintaining a healthy diet. When brushing is not an option, reach for some sugarless gum as it prevents plaque build-up and can be a back-up option.

Remember, in addition to personal care, professional dental care offered by your dentist is very important to ensure good oral health.
